November is Diabetes Month but more specifically today is World Diabetes Day. Now what does that mean? That means that you'll see hopefully lots of people out wearing blue, monuments and city buildings lit in blue light all recognizing the need for more awareness and understanding of both Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes. All around the globe people are celebrating World Diabetes Day today.

What am I doing to celebrate? Wearing blue of course (makes my pink Animas pump stand out even more) and going for a run in the Okanagan sunshine. I'll be chatting about Diabetes with a group of hockey parents at a gathering tonight. I met with an adorable 6 year old boy from Penticton last night that has had Type 1 since he was 3. We went bowling, tested our sugars together and compared pumps. But one of the big things I'm doing today, is I'm investigating the resources available to people and families with members with Diabetes here in the Okanagan. From what I've been told from various sources thus far is that there really isn't much around. They don't like the Diabetes Education Centres because they feel like they are always being put down for not taking care of themselves instead of encouraged. The wheels in my brain are spinning on ideas of setting up evening talks, support groups, and facilitating discussions between people and families with Diabetes to share tips, tricks, ideas, and stories. As people with Diabetes, we learn so much from each other.

So I'm into the fourth week of my training program. I'm seeing results already in terms of strength which is nice. I'm quite enjoying being back in the gym and having a bit of time off the water. I've gotten to play "mom" this week looking after a 10yr old hockey player while his folks are off laying on a beach in Mexico on a much needed holiday. I head to Vancouver next weekend to participate in the CORA meetings and to hopefully get a little more invovled in the organization then I'm back to Ontario til after the holidays.

I manage to keep myself quite busy out here working on little projects here and there for various people but I still have to finish up the work I started in the spring in terms of creating sponsorship packages. All my racing and traveling is self funded. I do not get any money from the government or sport organization to compete for Canada. I do it purely for the love of my sport. With the IVF World Championships taking place May 25-29th in New Caledonia in 2010, I have to raise the money to cover my expense for the trip as well as training leading up to it. Some of my expenses include: rent, gas, food, supplements, gym fees, paddling club fees, training camps (fees, travel, accomidation), coaching, new paddles, entry fees, airfare to/from New Caledonia, and accomodation while there, just to name a few! While I do plan on trying to work part-time while I'm training, the support from sponsors means that I can focus on my training and not have to worry about if I have enough money to eat properly that week.

If you or anyone you know is interested in becoming a sponsor, I'll get a package to you as soon as I have them ready. Just fire me an email.

And again, huge THANK YOUS to all those fine folks that have helped me along the way. Moral support (loved the txts, calls and fb posts of support), transportation (to race courses, home from the gatherings, etc), accommodations (and the offers of accommodations), idea givers, wonderful cooks and .... for everything. I have the best friends a gal could ever hope for. TIme and time again you folks exceed what normal friends would do. YOU ROCK!
