Today I recieved a phone call from Doug Dressman, Executive Director of the Diabetes Exercise and Sport Association. He informed me that I was this year's recipient of the 2009 DESA LifeScan Athletic Achievement Award. The purpose of this award is to regonize individuals with diabetes who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in pursuit of their athletic goals, and who can serve as inspirational role models for all persons with diabetes.

About a month ago I put together my application and sent it off to the selection committee. I must admit it's been on my mind lately as I try to plan my departure from Toronto. Wondering when they were going to announce the winners. Well, now I know. I feel quite honoured to be receiving this award. As part of the award I get to go to Boston for the 2009 DESA North American Conference. I'll worry about moving out of my apartment and packing the car for BC when I get back I guess. Now I just have to apply for a Miscellaneous Leave from the TDSB to take the last day of school off. Good thing I have one day left (used 1 day for Kelowna in Sept, 3 for Hawaii in March)! The sad part is that I'm going to miss Commencement here at Boylen and the last day Staff Lunch. Not much I can do about that sadly, the flight times just don't work well.

So the adventure is going to start a little sooner than expected. A few more races to go before I hit the road though. Racing up in Parry Sound this weekend. I always love racing back on Georgain Bay. Looking forward to seeing lots of old friends and folks in the community that I don't get to see very often anymore. Next weekend is the TIDBF on Toronto Island. Not only is this a major festival but it's also going to be the launch for the National Womens Dragon Boat Team Calendar. It's an 18 month calendar that starts July 2009 and has pictures that promote and demonstrate the athleticism, dedication and beauty of female athletes. If you're interested in purchasing one of these calendars I'm taking orders now. They are $20 and the money goes to support our team goal to defend our World Championship title.
